JAMS 487

Internship

In fall 2021, I interned with Christian News Northwest, a small monthly newspaper with a readership of about 29,000 across Oregon and Southwest Washington. My responsibilities at the newspaper included calling potential advertisers, gathering information about Thanksgiving Day meals for the needy, conducting research, doing interviews and writing stories. This article about Hope Station, a faith-based food bank for the working poor in Salem, Oregon, was my favorite.

40 Days for Life

Trigger Warning: The following photo links to an article I wrote about a two-day prayer vigil that 40 Days for Life hosted in front of a Planned Parenthood building in Salem, Oregon. I include it here to demonstrate that, while most of my published pieces are feature stories, I also have experience writing hard news stories.

Freelance Writing: Pacific City Sun

My internship with Christian News Northwest opened a door for me to do freelance writing for the Pacific City Sun when its editor, Tim Hirsch, purchased Christian News Northwest midway through the semester. This story about Jim and Grace Mick, a recently retired couple, who opened a small shop that features each of their hobbies–fishing for him and fiber arts for her–was an especially delightful one to write.

News Reporting: Yamhill County’s News-Register

News Reporting was taught by an adjunct professor, Steve Bagwell, who was the managing editor at Yamhill County’s News-Register at the time. Occasionally, he selects student work for publication. Three of my stories were printed.

Journalism Practices: The Linfield Review

In JAMS 111, students develop their journalism skills by writing for the Linfield Review, which is the college’s student newspaper. Here are stories that were published in both the print and online versions.
