Frequently Asked Questions

How much do foster parents get paid?
Being a foster parent is not a paid job. The money parents receive is to cover the cost of caring for a child. It is not considered income and is not taxable.
How long do children stay in a home?
Some children just need emergency housing until a relative can be contacted. Others will stay longer while their parents complete treatment or other court ordered requirements. Some will remain in care until an adoptive family is found.
Can a person adopt a child who is placed in their care?
If a child cannot be reunited with their parents and there are no other relatives to care for him or her, the foster placement can sometimes be changed to an adoptive status.
How long does it take to become a foster parent?
It can take anywhere from three to six months.
Are foster parents required to take in children of all ages?
The ages of children a parent would like to foster will be discussed during the application and home study process.

Can foster parents spank children?

Spanking is not allowed. There are other more appropriate ways to discipline children who have suffered trauma and neglect. Giving “time outs,” taking away privileges, using rewards and praising children for good behavior are just a few.
What are the requirements to be a foster parent?
The rules vary from state to state, but generally applicants must be at least 21, a legal resident of the U.S., already have an income adequate to care for their household and no felony or misdemeanor convictions involving child, sexual or elder abuse.
What if a person has pets?
Pet owners can be foster parents provided their animals are friendly and are up-to-date on all vaccinations.
Can a single person be a foster parent?
Yes.
Can unmarried couples be foster parents?
There is no marriage requirement.
Do parents have to own or live in a house?
Foster parents can live in a stick-built or manufactured home, condominium or apartment. All that is required are safe living quarters and adequate room to house their family and the number of additional children they care for.
I’m unemployed. Can I become a foster parent?
Those applying for a foster license must already have some type of income that covers their family’s living expenses.
Can former foster children become foster parents?
Absolutely. Their experience can help them be more aware of the needs of children in their care.
Do prospective parents have to be high school graduates?
All potential foster parents attend special training that will prepare them to care for children. There are no other educational requirements.
